New Delhi: Amid reports of differences within the Election Commission of India (ECI) and claims that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar took key decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls without consulting the other two election commissioners, sources in the poll panel have said that all decisions were taken unanimously.
According to ECI sources cited by a national daily English newspaper, all decisions of the Election Commission, including those related to the SIR of electoral rolls, were taken unanimously with the approval of the Chief Election Commissioner and the two other election commissioners.
Rajya Sabha MP and senior advocate Kapil Sibal, however, reacted strongly to the controversy and demanded that all decisions taken by the Election Commission without majority consent be declared null and void.
Sibal claimed that most decisions taken after June 25, 2025, were not taken by a majority and were made despite objections from the other two election commissioners, S.S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. He alleged that the CEC was taking decisions without adequately considering the views of the other two members.
Sibal further claimed that some of these decisions had affected the electoral process and said the CEC’s actions could be held responsible for the alleged irregularities.
He argued that a decision cannot be considered a decision of the Election Commission if it is not taken by a majority of its members. He therefore demanded that all decisions taken so far without majority approval be declared null and void.
The controversy over the reported differences within the Election Commission began after media reports claimed that CEC Gyanesh Kumar had taken several important decisions concerning the SIR without taking the other two election commissioners into confidence.
