Ludhiana: Police have claimed that a property dispute was behind the killing of a former sarpanch of Manewal village in the Ladoval area of Ludhiana, with the victim’s brother allegedly identified as the mastermind.
Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapn Sharma said the two families had been involved in a long-running legal dispute over land, with cases pending before courts for several years. Police have named seven people in connection with the murder, but all the accused are currently absconding and no arrests have been made so far.
The deceased was identified as 60-year-old Navtej Singh, alias Neetu.
According to police, two motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire at Navtej Singh’s Innova on Saturday evening, firing around 10 rounds. He sustained critical injuries in the attack.
Local residents subsequently used the victim’s vehicle to take him to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMC) in Ludhiana. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police said further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances of the attack and trace the accused.
