Harmanpreet Kaur steps down as India women’s captain across all three formats

New Delhi: India women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur on Tuesday stepped down from the captaincy across all three formats, ending her long tenure as the team’s leader.

Announcing her decision, the 37-year-old said she believed she had fulfilled her responsibilities as captain and was now ready to return to the field simply for her “love of the game”.

The announcement came after a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati to assess the team’s performances over recent months. The meeting was chaired by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and was attended by Harmanpreet, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar.

Harmanpreet first took charge of India’s T20 team in 2016 and remained captain for around a decade. She was appointed ODI captain in 2022 and became the leader across all three formats in 2023.

Her decision brings an end to a significant chapter in Indian women’s cricket, during which she led the team across T20Is, ODIs and Tests.
