Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Wednesday modified its earlier directions and permitted the last rites of Daljit Singh, a resident of Mansa district, to be conducted at his native village Bhamme Kalan instead of Chandigarh.
The court also clarified that no political party, politician or organisation would be allowed to participate in or interfere with the funeral proceedings.
Justice Sanjay Vashisth directed that following a fresh post-mortem at PGIMER, Chandigarh, the body be kept in the hospital’s mortuary for the day. It should then be transported directly to the cremation ground in Bhamme Kalan under adequate police protection for the last rites before noon on November 5.
The modification came in response to an application filed by Daljit Singh’s widow, Paramjit Kaur, and his mother, Shinder Kaur, seeking a change in the venue of the funeral in accordance with the family’s traditions and wishes.
Daljit Singh’s sister, Amarjit Kaur, and his widow were personally present during the hearing.
