New Delhi: India added two more medals to its tally at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday, with Lovepreet Singh winning a silver medal in men’s weightlifting and Seema securing bronze in the women’s discus throw.
Competing in the men’s 110kg weightlifting event, Lovepreet lifted a combined 388kg to finish second. He registered 176kg in the snatch and 212kg in the clean and jerk.
Lovepreet failed to lift 217kg in his third clean and jerk attempt, narrowly missing the gold medal. New Zealand’s David Andrews won the event with a Games record total of 389kg.
In the women’s discus throw, Seema clinched the bronze medal with a best throw of 58.65 metres, achieved on her third attempt. Her fourth, fifth and sixth attempts were fouls.
The 27-year-old, who returned to competition after becoming a mother and is currently pursuing a PhD, earned India’s second medal of the day with her podium finish.
Jamaica’s Samantha Hall won the gold medal with a throw of 61.66 metres, while Canada’s Julia Tunks took silver with 60.67 metres. Another Indian athlete, Nidhi Rani, finished fourth with a best effort of 53.19 metres.
With the two medals, India’s tally rose to 17 medals—three gold, 10 silver and four bronze—placing the country 10th in the overall standings.
