PHAGWARA: Lovely Professional University (LPU) has strongly rejected what it described as “false, baseless and fabricated” rumours circulating on social media and other platforms, saying the misinformation was creating unnecessary confusion among students and disturbing the university’s peaceful academic environment.
In a statement issued by Registrar Dr Monica Gulati, the university said certain “anti-social elements” were spreading misleading information. It alleged that the manner in which the rumours were being circulated appeared to be a deliberate attempt to damage the institution’s reputation and tarnish its image.
LPU categorically said there was no truth in the rumours currently being circulated and appealed to students, parents and the public not to believe, share or further circulate unverified information.
The university also advised students and parents to rely only on information communicated through LPU’s official channels and avoid acting on rumours or messages circulating through social media and other unofficial platforms.
The statement came after tension was reported at the university around 2am on Sunday following the circulation of an unverified claim alleging that a female student had been raped on the campus.
The development came a day after unrest at Chitkara University, where unverified social media claims had similarly triggered student protests and violence.
LPU urged students to remain calm and verify information through official sources before drawing conclusions or taking action.
