Amritsar: Charan Kaur, grandmother of Khalistan-sympathetic MP Amritpal Singh from Khadoor Sahib in Tarn Taran, died on Sunday. Her mortal remains have been kept at her ancestral village of Jallupur Khera in Amritsar.
A few days ago, Amritpal Singh, who is lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam, had spoken to his grandmother over a video call. The conversation took place following an order from an Amritsar court, which granted him 10 minutes to speak to her.
Amritpal’s lawyers had filed an application seeking permission for him to speak to his ailing grandmother. Charan Kaur, 85, had been unwell for a long time.
A case was registered against Amritpal Singh on February 24, 2023, at the Ajnala police station in Amritsar after he and his supporters stormed the police station to secure the release of an associate.
He remained on the run for nearly a month before being arrested on April 23, 2023. Since his arrest, he has been lodged in Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA).
