New Delhi: Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh on Wednesday rejected Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s allegation that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had ordered security forces to open fire on students protesting over the NEET paper leak, asserting that no bullets were fired during the demonstrations.
Replying to the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha, Singh said Gandhi’s allegation was factually incorrect and could not be substantiated.
“The first and most basic point is that when no bullets were fired, the question of anyone ordering firing does not arise,” Singh said.
The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said the authority to order police firing rests with a magistrate, not with a Union minister, and added that Rahul Gandhi’s remarks reflected a lack of understanding of administrative procedures.
Defending Amit Shah, Singh said only tear gas had been used during the protests and reiterated that no firing had taken place.
Responding to Gandhi’s claim that the Home Minister was on a foreign visit during the protests, Singh said the allegation was incorrect and asserted that Shah had not travelled abroad.
He also criticised Gandhi for making what he described as unverified allegations in Parliament, saying that making such claims without facts and then leaving the House was not the conduct expected of a responsible Leader of the Opposition.
