Police stop opposition ‘Save Democracy March’ demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation

New Delhi: Police on Tuesday stopped a “Save Democracy March” by leaders of 19 opposition parties demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were reportedly detained by police and taken towards a bus during the protest. They later got off and entered the All India Radio (Akashvani) building, where they continued their sit-in and demanded permission to proceed towards the Election Commission.

Congress workers also reached the area outside Akashvani and some were seen pushing against the gate and climbing onto a bus. Police personnel moved in to clear the area.

The opposition parties had begun their march from the new Parliament building towards the Election Commission office. The Election Commission headquarters is reportedly around 270 metres from the Akashvani premises.

Police stopped the opposition MPs three times during the march. During one of the confrontations, Rahul Gandhi was seen climbing over barricades while carrying the national flag. He was also seen holding a poster that read, “Gyanesh, it’s done bro.”

The protest had continued for around three hours by 1pm, according to the information provided. The demonstration was part of a series of opposition protests against the Election Commission in Delhi and Mumbai in recent days.
