Chandigarh: The Punjab BJP on Wednesday demanded an apology from the Gandhi family for the 1984 anti-Sikh violence ahead of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s “Insaf Rally” in Fagguwal village, Sangrur.
The party also launched a conclave titled “Zakhm 84 De” in Chandigarh, aimed at highlighting what it described as the truth about the violence.
Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon and state in-charge Satish Poonia inaugurated an exhibition on the 1984 violence.
Dhillon alleged that the Congress rally in Delhi on November 1 had reopened the wounds of victims. He questioned why the Gandhi family had not apologised to the Sikh community even after 42 years.
Former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also targeted Rahul Gandhi, asking whether he agreed with or rejected the remark attributed to his late father, former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi: “When a big tree falls, the earth shakes.”
Prasad said former prime minister Manmohan Singh had apologised in Parliament, but alleged that the real power rested with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, who had not apologised.
He further claimed that the Nanavati Commission under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed under the Narendra Modi government had helped bring accused persons, including Sajjan Kumar, to justice.
