Sangrur: Tensions ran high in Sangrur after hundreds of government employees protesting for restoration of the old pension scheme clashed with police while attempting to march towards Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s native village, Satauj.
Police used water cannons to stop the protesters from moving ahead. Several employees reportedly suffered injuries, while some turbans came off during the confrontation.
The employees had gathered in Tolawal on the call of the Sanjha Manch for Restoration of Old Pension and held a protest rally demanding restoration of the old pension scheme, release of pending dearness allowance, withdrawal of the probation period and cancellation of central pay scales.
Barricades breached
Police had set up barricades at around three locations between Tolawal and Satauj to prevent the protesters from reaching the village. Protesters reportedly breached two police barricades and moved ahead through fields.
At the third barricade, police used water cannons to stop them. Despite the restrictions, some protesters reached close to Satauj, with several entering the village.
Police reportedly detained around 15 employees, who were taken to Dharamgarh police station.
Employee leaders alleged that the government had failed to fulfil promises made before coming to power, including restoration of the old pension scheme. They also criticised the three-year probation period for newly recruited employees and alleged that government employees were being paid less than those covered under central pay scales.
Meeting with CM scheduled
The protest leaders said several employees were injured during the water-cannon action and alleged that some protesters were treated harshly by police.
The situation eased after the civil and police administration arranged a meeting between employee representatives and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for August 27. Following the assurance of the meeting, the protesters called off the confrontation.
