Mansa: The Punjab government has reshuffled deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) across all three subdivisions of Mansa district amid the ongoing protests over the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhotta.
Mansa DSP Harjinder Singh Gill has already been suspended, with additional charge given to DSP (D) Pushpinder Singh Gill. According to a notification issued by the Special Director General of Police (Headquarters), Gurpratap Singh, previously posted as DSP Command Centre in Fatehgarh Sahib, has been appointed DSP of Mansa subdivision.
Harwinder Singh Saran, who was serving as DSP of Bathinda Rural, has been posted as DSP Sardulgarh, while Sarabjit Singh Brar, DSP of the Special Branch in Bathinda, has been appointed DSP Budhlada. Budhlada DSP Sikandar Singh has been transferred to Ladda Kothi in Sangrur. Three officers of SP rank have also been temporarily deployed in Mansa.
The reshuffle comes amid continuing protests demanding justice in the Jhotta murder case. Parvinder Singh Jhotta, who was associated with anti-drug activities in Mansa, was killed on October 13. Allegations have been made against Ashwani, a medical store owner, who is accused of opening fire on him.
A 5-minute-48-second live video reportedly posted on Jhotta’s Facebook page captured the sound of gunshots. According to reports, Jhotta and his associates were seen arguing with the shop owner over drug-related issues before the shooting took place. The circumstances surrounding the incident are subject to investigation.
Jhotta had been active in campaigns against drug abuse and alleged drug sales in the Mansa area for a considerable period. He reportedly intervened against drug dealing and encouraged village panchayats to pass resolutions opposing drugs. His activities had also led to disputes on several occasions.
