Chandigarh: The Punjab government has launched the ‘Meri Rasoi Yojana’ to strengthen food and nutritional security for needy and economically weaker families across the state.
Launched from Bhalwan village in Sangrur district under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the scheme aims to reduce household expenses and provide financial relief to families amid rising inflation.
Under the scheme, 40 lakh needy families are being provided free ration kits every quarter. Each kit contains:
2 kg pulses
2 kg sugar
1 kg salt
200 grams turmeric powder
1 litre mustard oil
According to Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, more than 4.5 lakh food kits have so far been delivered to beneficiaries.
The government has clarified that these ration kits are separate from the wheat already provided to eligible beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act.
A budget allocation of ₹900 crore was announced for the scheme during the Punjab Budget 2026-27 by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema.
Markfed has been designated as the nodal agency for the implementation and distribution of the kits. The Food and Civil Supplies Department has also been directed to ensure that the quality of the food items is not compromised. The government has warned that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible if complaints regarding substandard items are received.
Chief Minister Mann has said ensuring nutritious food for every citizen and child is not merely a government promise but a basic responsibility.
