Chandigarh: In a significant development in Punjab politics, Gurpreet Sekhon, a convict in the 2016 Nabha jailbreak case, has joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at a function held on Sunday.
Sekhon was convicted in connection with the Nabha jailbreak, in which armed assailants attacked Nabha’s high-security jail in November 2016 and freed several inmates, including alleged Khalistan militants. He was subsequently arrested again in February 2017.
After his release, Sekhon has presented himself as a social activist and has been involved in public activities.
According to the information provided, Sekhon is expected to contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly election from Zira in Ferozepur district. His induction into the AAP is likely to attract political attention, given his criminal past and his alleged role in the high-profile jailbreak case.
AAP leaders have not yet publicly confirmed his candidature from Zira.
