Edmonton: Three people, including a Punjabi-origin correctional officer, were killed in a tragic road accident in Alberta while a prisoner was being transported in a correctional services vehicle.
The crash occurred in the afternoon when the Edmonton correctional services vehicle carrying a prisoner was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle.
The deceased have been identified as Nicolay (Nick) Sarban, a correctional officer associated with the Edmonton Institution for Women, Ramandeep Kaur Mann, and detainee Kiara Muswa.
Ramandeep had moved to Canada on study visa
Ramandeep Kaur Mann, 24, was originally from Gurhe village in Ludhiana district. She had moved to Canada several years ago on a study visa and completed her studies in Manitoba before relocating to Edmonton around a year ago.
Interested in sports, Ramandeep had joined Correctional Services Canada as a correctional officer around six months ago.
Several others were injured in the collision and taken to hospital. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, although the exact cause has not yet been established.
The Commissioner of Correctional Services Canada paid tribute to the two officers who died and expressed condolences to Kiara Muswa’s family.
