New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday while leading a protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence over the police action against student protesters.
The opposition leaders had joined a sit-in demonstration that began on Monday, with Rahul Gandhi participating alongside several senior Congress leaders, including the Chief Ministers of Karnataka and Kerala, to protest against the police action on students demanding education reforms.
As police moved to disperse the protesters on Tuesday, security personnel detained several opposition leaders. During the operation, Rahul Gandhi lay down on the ground and resisted being taken away, leading to a brief scuffle with police personnel.
According to Congress leaders, Rahul Gandhi sustained a minor injury below one of his eyes during the commotion.
Meanwhile, dramatic scenes unfolded as Priyanka Gandhi Vadra continued protesting even after the police vehicle carrying detained leaders began moving, holding on to the bus door before being taken into custody.
The protest was part of the Opposition’s campaign over the alleged NEET paper leak, demands for education reforms and criticism of the police action against student demonstrators.
