Sangrur: The controversy over the alleged custodial assault of Mohanjit Singh Sidhu, who had waved black flags during Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s programme in Sheron village, has intensified, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi speaking to him over the phone.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring visited Mohanjit at a hospital in Sangrur and facilitated the conversation with Rahul Gandhi. The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha sought details of the incident and assured Mohanjit of all possible support.
Rahul Gandhi also praised Mohanjit for standing up for what he believed was right and raising his voice. He directed the Punjab Congress leadership to work towards ensuring justice for the alleged victim.
Mohanjit, a resident of Sheron village in the Sunam constituency, had alleged that police detained him on September 2 during Chief Minister Mann’s Lok Milni programme and subjected him to torture.
DSP transferred, three personnel sent to lines
The Congress has continued to target the Punjab government and police administration over the allegations and is preparing to meet the Governor to raise the issue.
Amid mounting political pressure, the Punjab government has taken action in the matter. A DSP has been transferred, while three police personnel have been sent to the police lines.
The allegations of custodial torture are under investigation and have not been independently established.
