Bathinda: Congress leader and former Punjab minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa on Sunday claimed that the ‘Insaaf Rally’ to be addressed by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi in Sangrur on November 4 would draw more than two lakh people and create fresh political momentum in Punjab.
Bajwa made the statement while speaking to reporters after a meeting of Congress workers from Bathinda and Faridkot districts at the Congress Bhawan. The meeting was held under the leadership of Bathinda urban district president advocate Rajan Garg and rural district president Pritam Singh Kotbhai.
He said Congress workers, people across Punjab and particularly members of the business community were enthusiastic about the rally and expected a large turnout.
Targeting the BJP government at the Centre and Union home minister Amit Shah, Bajwa questioned the Centre’s efforts to tackle drug trafficking in Punjab. He said the government should first explain cross-border drug smuggling and the seizure of large consignments of narcotics at Gujarat ports before making claims about making Punjab drug-free.
Bajwa also alleged that the spread of heroin in Punjab had increased during the previous SAD-BJP government and said the issue of drugs should not be used for political purposes.
Raising concerns over law and order in Punjab, he alleged that the situation was deteriorating, with young people losing their lives to drugs and those speaking out against the drug trade being targeted with gunfire.
He further claimed that people were being deprived of basic facilities and were increasingly looking towards the Congress as an alternative.
The November 4 rally is expected to focus on issues concerning Punjab, with the Congress seeking to mobilise support ahead of the next assembly elections.
