Chandigarh: Widespread rainfall across Punjab over the past 24 hours has brought significant relief from the prevailing monsoon deficit, with several districts recording light to moderate showers and strong winds.
After witnessing a rainfall deficit of as much as 77 per cent earlier this season, the latest spell has substantially improved the situation. The state recorded an average rainfall of 16.8 mm during the last 24 hours.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Punjab has received 20.3 mm of rainfall during the first four days of August, compared with the long-period average (LPA) of 27 mm for the same period. As a result, the rainfall deficit for the month has reduced to 25 per cent.
Patiala recorded the highest rainfall in the state between August 1 and 4, receiving 62.8 mm, followed by Rupnagar (60 mm) and Pathankot (41 mm).
IMD data showed that Moga remained the only district in Punjab to receive no rainfall during August so far, while Tarn Taran, Bathinda and Ferozepur recorded the lowest rainfall among the state’s districts.
Meteorologists expect the recent spell of rain to provide relief to farmers and improve moisture levels after weeks of below-normal monsoon activity.
