Mumbai: ‘Ramayana: Part One’, a film based on the Hindu mythological epic, has made a strong start at the global box office, collecting ₹155 crore in gross earnings on its opening day, the makers said on Friday.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film was released worldwide on November 5. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi portrays Sita, Yash plays Ravana and Ravi Dubey essays the role of Lakshman.
In a press note, the producers said the film recorded the biggest pre-Diwali opening in the history of Indian cinema.
“Making a spectacular global box-office debut, ‘Ramayana’ recorded a historic ₹155 crore worldwide gross on its first day, marking the biggest pre-Diwali opening in Indian cinema history,” the statement said.
The makers credited the strong opening to the overwhelming response from audiences. They said cinema attendance generally tends to be lower before Diwali because of festival preparations and travel, but the film drew large crowds from its morning shows.
‘Ramayana: Part One’ is the first instalment of a two-part cinematic adaptation of the Indian epic. It is produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios in collaboration with Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.
