Chandigarh: With the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections approaching, the Shiromani Akali Dal Punar Surjeet has once again offered an alliance to ‘Akali Dal Waris Punjab De’, seeking to bring different Panthic groups together for the elections.
The two organisations had previously formed a committee to explore an alliance, but the talks failed to reach a conclusion.
According to sources close to the SAD (Punar Surjeet), the latest proposal was made by party president and former Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh during a rally held in Fatehgarh Sahib on Wednesday. Several other organisations associated with the Reunited Akali grouping also participated in the rally.
40-40-35 formula proposed
Under the proposed seat-sharing formula, 40 Assembly seats would be offered to ‘Waris Punjab De’, while another 40 seats would go to the SAD and its allied organisations.
The remaining 35 seats would be reserved for families of martyrs to contest the elections.
The proposal also calls for the formation of a seven-member committee, comprising three representatives from ‘Waris Punjab De’, three from the SAD and one mutually agreed member.
The committee would visit districts and Assembly constituencies across Punjab to assess the political ground situation.
If a constituency has a strong candidate from either of the two groups, the proposed formula would allow the ticket to be awarded to that candidate.
The renewed offer comes as Panthic political groups prepare to consolidate their positions ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
