Sangrur: A young man from Namol village allegedly attempted suicide by consuming a poisonous substance outside the Sangrur district administrative complex, claiming he was distressed over a drug-related case and alleged administrative inaction.
The man, identified as Jagseer Singh, alias Jagga, was initially taken to Sangrur Civil Hospital after the incident on Sunday. He was later referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, where he is undergoing treatment.
Jagga alleged in a video that he had uploaded footage on social media showing the alleged open sale of ‘chitta’, a synthetic drug, in his village. He claimed that after the video went viral, the village sarpanch repeatedly threatened him and pressured him to delete it.
He further alleged that CCTV cameras installed at his house were damaged. Jagga said he had also submitted a written complaint to the police but claimed that no action was taken.
Police said a case has been registered in connection with the incident and an investigation is underway.
The incident comes days after the September 7 suicide of labourer Gulzar Singh in Sangrur. Gulzar’s family had alleged that he was humiliated after raising a question about the supply of drugs with Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema during an event in Dirba.
