Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has announced its support for the Punjab bandh called on October 15 to protest the killing of Sikh anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota.
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said the committee’s head office and all its institutions would remain closed on Thursday in protest against the killing. He said the organisation stood firmly with those campaigning to protect Punjab’s youth from drug abuse and would extend all possible assistance to Jhota’s family.
Dhami described the killing as brutal and said the protest was intended to highlight the seriousness of the state’s drug problem. He said hundreds of young people were falling victim to drugs every day, leaving families devastated.
The SGPC chief also referred to concerns raised during interactions with members of the Sikh community in various villages as part of the Miri Piri Khalsa March. He said reports of drugs being sold openly in different areas had raised serious questions about the state government’s claims regarding its campaign against narcotics.
The bandh call follows growing public anger over Jhota’s killing in Mansa, with supporters demanding justice and stronger action against the drug trade.
