Chandigarh: Six Rajya Sabha MPs who recently moved from the Aam Aadmi Party to the BJP are set to play a key role in the Punjab BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, as the party begins preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.
The six MPs — Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta and Ashok Mittal — will attend a Punjab BJP meeting together for the first time since joining the party.
The BJP plans to give the leaders important responsibilities during the proposed anti-drug campaign, considering their previous political and organisational experience in Punjab as AAP leaders.
For Chadha, the meeting marks his second visit to Punjab since leaving AAP. He had earlier attended a BJP meeting in Ludhiana. His recent political differences with the AAP government intensified after his name was removed from the electoral rolls in Mohali.
Pathak, who was one of AAP’s key organisational figures in Punjab, is expected to play a role in the campaign during his first visit to the state after joining the BJP.
Rajinder Gupta is likely to be given an important role in organising the yatra in Ludhiana and Barnala.
The six MPs were among seven Rajya Sabha members from Punjab associated with AAP. Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal is the only one who continues to remain with the party.
The BJP’s decision to involve the former AAP leaders is expected to strengthen its campaign against drugs while also giving the party access to leaders who have previously worked extensively across Punjab.
