New Delhi: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has said he will continue his indefinite hunger strike until representatives of the protesting students and youth leaders are allowed to meet Members of Parliament (MPs) during the ongoing Monsoon Session.
Wangchuk said the protesters want MPs from different political parties to discuss issues related to the country’s education system and address concerns raised by students. He also appealed to his supporters to maintain peace and continue their protests in a lawful manner.
The protest began over demands for reforms in the education system, allegations of irregularities in the NEET examination and the paper leak controversy. Demonstrators are also seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Wangchuk is continuing his fast from Safdarjung Hospital, where he was admitted after being taken from Jantar Mantar by Delhi Police. Police have denied allegations circulating on social media that officers misbehaved with Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, during the incident.
Meanwhile, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke and several student leaders are discussing the next phase of the protest.
A day earlier, Geetanjali Angmo had said Wangchuk would consider ending his hunger strike if political parties assured the protesters that issues relating to education reforms and accountability would be taken up in Parliament during the Monsoon Session.
