Sonia Gandhi shares Rajiv Gandhi love story in first X post

New Delhi: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi shared memories of how her love story with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi began in her first post on X on Saturday, offering a glimpse into her forthcoming book, Belonging: A Journey of Love.

In a video accompanying the post, Sonia recalled looking for a place in England where she could find food she liked. Her search led her to a Greek restaurant in Cambridge, where a friend introduced her to Rajiv Gandhi.

“That’s where the love story began, and together we built a world of memories,” she said.

Recalling their first meeting, Sonia said she felt almost immediately that Rajiv was someone she would want to spend her life with. She later learnt that he had felt the same way. The two became friends and spent time together at parties, outings and student gatherings.

“He was a very gentle-looking person. Of course, he was very good-looking. But his gentle nature was immediately apparent,” she said.

Sonia created her X account on Saturday and used her first post to share a video about the book, which is scheduled for release on November 10.

The memoir traces her journey from her childhood in Italy’s Veneto region after the Second World War to her meeting with Rajiv in Cambridge in 1965. It recounts their marriage, her first meeting with her mother-in-law, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and her efforts to adapt to life in India, including learning Hindi, wearing saris and embracing Indian food and culture.

The book also reflects on tragedies that transformed the Gandhi family, including the death of Sanjay Gandhi in an aircraft crash, Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984 and Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991.
