Amritsar: A man allegedly linked to the murder of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjit Singh was killed in a police encounter in the Islamabad area on Saturday night, police said.
The deceased was identified as Deepak Singh, a resident of Mulechak village. ASI Harjit Singh was shot dead while on duty in the Bhagtanwala grain market area, under the jurisdiction of Gate Hakima police station, during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
According to police, Deepak was identified as one of the suspects during the investigation with the help of CCTV footage, technical inputs, tower-dump analysis and information from local sources.
Police said that at around 9.45pm on Saturday, a team signalled two suspects travelling on a scooter to stop at a checkpoint. The suspects allegedly opened fire at the police team and fled towards another checkpoint.
According to the police account, the suspects again fired at the next checkpoint, firing four rounds. The police then allegedly retaliated in self-defence.
During the encounter in the Islamabad police station area, Deepak sustained gunshot injuries. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Police claimed to have recovered a .30-bore pistol, two magazines containing eight live cartridges, a mobile phone and an Activa scooter, allegedly linked to the crime.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
