Three more arrested in LPU campus violence case, total reaches 22

Jalandhar: Punjab Police have arrested three more youths in connection with the violence and vandalism at Lovely Professional University (LPU) on September 26, taking the total number of people arrested in the case to 22.

According to police sources, the three accused were produced before a court and remanded in police custody for two days. They have been identified as Liyush Chauhan, a resident of Deep Nagar in Jalandhar; Om Kumar, from Bihar; and Nikhil Kumar, a resident of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh.

Tension had erupted on the university campus on September 26 after claims alleging the rape of a female student circulated on social media. The unrest involved vandalism and a blockade of the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway that lasted more than 18 hours.

Police have registered four FIRs in connection with the incident and formed an eight-member special investigation team (SIT). Investigators are examining the possible involvement of more than 400 youths and analysing CCTV footage, social media messages and other digital evidence.

Police are also taking action in connection with around 300 social media posts containing allegedly inflammatory material and AI-generated videos. The investigation aims to establish the role of individuals involved in the violence and verify the claims circulated online.
