‘VVIP treatment’ row: AAP MLA accused of slapping truck driver over road obstruction

Ludhiana: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Rajinderpal Kaur Chhina has been accused of slapping a truck driver after an argument over giving way to her vehicle in Ludhiana.

The incident reportedly took place on Monday afternoon on Daba Road. According to the driver and witnesses, a truck stopped on the road while the MLA’s vehicle was behind it. Her driver allegedly kept sounding the horn, but the truck did not move.

Chhina then reportedly got out of the car and approached the truck along with her security personnel. A video circulating on social media purportedly shows her opening the truck’s door and asking the driver to come down. The driver was then allegedly slapped.

The truck driver said he was frightened after the alleged slap and began asking what his mistake was. He also claimed that the MLA threatened him during the confrontation.

The incident triggered a protest by the truck driver’s colleagues, who demanded that police register an FIR against the MLA.

Former Union minister and BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu also criticised the AAP government over the incident, alleging that raising a hand against a poor truck driver reflected “the arrogance of power”.

MLA denies slapping allegation

Chhina has denied slapping the driver. She said she had only taken the keys from the driver’s hand during the incident.

Chhina was first elected as an AAP MLA from Ludhiana in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.

Police action in the matter and the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault are awaited.
