22 employees of sugar factory attempt self-immolation during protest in Latur, Maharashtra
Twenty-two employees tried to immolate themselves outside a sugar mill in Maharashtra’s Latur on Monday, police said. The move was taken as a mark of protest against non-payment of salaries.
The security and electricity department personnel of Pannageshwar sugar mill at Pangaon in Renapur tehsil tried to commit suicide by pouring diesel and petrol on their bodies, a police official said.
He said the protesters had not received their salaries for the last 15 months and had submitted a memorandum to the factory authorities on September 25, demanding that their salaries be paid and provident fund be deposited. The police have detained the protesting employees, the official said.
