Farmers announce march to Delhi on January 21 over MSP guarantee law
New Delhi: Farmers protesting at the Shambhu border of Haryana and Punjab have announced a march to Delhi on January 21, demanding a law to guarantee Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops.
Farmer leader Sarwan Pandher said that 101 farmers would participate in the march, accusing the central government of avoiding dialogue and vowing to escalate the agitation.
Pandher warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the farmers would not back down until a law ensuring crop purchases at MSP is enacted. “All our demands are in the country’s interest and must be implemented,” he said.
Protesters at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders have been agitating for 11 months. Farmer leader Jagjit Dallewal has been on a hunger strike for 52 days at the Khanauri border, with his condition now critical. In solidarity, 111 farmers are also on a hunger strike for the second consecutive day.
The farmers previously attempted to march to Delhi three times in December but were blocked by the Haryana Police. The upcoming march is seen as a renewed push for their demands.
