‘It is dangerous to get pregnant without marriage’: Supreme Court allows rape victim to undergo abortion

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday allowed a rape victim to undergo an abortion, saying it can be dangerous to get pregnant without marriage. The victim is 27 weeks pregnant. Taking note of the victim’s medical report, a bench of Justices B V Nagaratna and Ujjwal Bhuiya said it was not right on the part of the Gujarat High Court to dismiss the petitioner’s plea seeking permission to terminate the foetus.
The apex court noted that getting pregnant in the fabric of marriage in Indian society is an occasion of joy and celebration not only for the couple but also for their family and friends. On the contrary, getting pregnant with sexual abuse from marriage can be dangerous. Such a condition not only affects the physical and mental health of pregnant women but can also cause their anxiety and mental distress.
