Mehul Choksi arrested in Belgium, India begins extradition process
New Delhi: Fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi, wanted in the Punjab National Bank loan fraud case, has been arrested in Belgium.
According to official sources, he was taken into custody on April 12 following an extradition request by Indian investigative agencies and is currently lodged in a Belgian jail.
Choksi was arrested based on two arrest warrants issued by a Mumbai court, dated May 23, 2018, and June 15, 2021. Indian authorities have initiated the formal process to extradite him from Belgium.
Following his arrest, Choksi has applied for bail, citing poor health. He told the court that he had travelled to Belgium for medical treatment and was residing in Antwerp with his wife.
