New strict FASTag rules now in effect, read all changes
New Delhi: The new FASTag rules, effective today, introduce several changes to toll payments. According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), FASTag payments will now be confirmed within a specified time frame after the tag is scanned at toll plazas.
FASTag, an electronic toll collection system, enables cashless payments by automatically deducting toll charges from linked accounts using RFID technology. A sticker is placed on the vehicle’s windshield, and the toll is deducted when the vehicle approaches the booth.
Key Changes to FASTag Rules:
Blacklisted FASTags: Transactions will be rejected if the FASTag is blacklisted, placed on the hotlist, or marked as low outstanding for over 60 minutes before reaching the toll. If blacklisted for 10 minutes after scanning, the payment will be cancelled, and a fine will be charged, doubling the toll fee.
Grace Period for Recharging: Users now have 70 minutes to recharge their FASTag status before reaching the toll booth. If recharged within 10 minutes of scanning, users may be eligible for a refund of the fine and only pay the standard toll fee.
Late Transactions: Additional charges will apply if the transaction is processed more than 15 minutes after passing the toll reader.
Chargeback Cooling Period: Banks can raise chargeback requests for incorrect deductions only after a 15-day cooling period.
What These Rules Mean for Users:
Avoid Last-Minute Recharges: If your FASTag is blacklisted for over 60 minutes before reaching the toll, a recharge will not resolve the issue.
Refunds Possible: Recharging within 10 minutes of scanning may allow users to request a refund and avoid paying double the toll fee.
Strict Transaction Monitoring: Users must ensure their FASTag is active to prevent delays, rejections, or additional charges.
How to Avoid FASTag Fines:
Ensure sufficient balance in your FASTag wallet.
Regularly check your FASTag status to avoid blacklisting.
Monitor transaction times to avoid delays.
Keep your FASTag active to prevent rejection at toll booths.
