RG Kar Medical College case: Sanjay Roy sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and murder

Kolkata: The Sealdah court has sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment till natural death for the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had sought the death penalty for Roy, but the court refrained from awarding it.

Justice Anirban Das stated that the crime did not fall under the “rarest of the rare” category required for a death sentence.

The court also directed the state government to pay Rs 17 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family.
