Young India will turn into rapidly ageing society in coming decades: UNFPA
New Delhi: The elderly population in India is growing rapidly and may surpass the child population by the middle of this century. This information has been revealed in the new report of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The report said that young India will rapidly transform into an aging society in the coming decades.
India has the largest population of adolescents and youth in the world. According to UNFPA’s ‘India Aging Report 2023’, the share of the elderly (people aged 60 years and above) at the national level was 10.1 per cent in 2021, which is projected to increase to 15 per cent in 2036 and 20.8 per cent in 2050. “By the end of the century, the number of elderly people in the country’s total population will exceed 36 percent,” the report said.’
