US President Trump objects to Apple’s expansion in India, warns of US job impact

Washington: US President Donald Trump has raised objections to Apple’s growing manufacturing presence in India, saying it could negatively impact employment in the United States.

Speaking during a business roundtable event in Doha, the capital of Qatar, Trump said he had clearly communicated his concerns to Apple CEO Tim Cook.

“I told Tim Cook that he’s going to expand into India and the United States thinks there’s no need for that. We don’t want them to expand into India,” Trump said.

His remarks come after Tim Cook recently revealed that nearly 50 per cent of iPhones sold in the US are now being manufactured in India. The statement has sparked debate over the implications of Apple’s shifting supply chain strategy on American jobs.
