A victim of mistaken identity: Kapurthala man’s 15-day business trip to Philippines turns into 5 years in jail
New Delhi: The 15-day tourist visa brought turmoil in the life of a man from Punjab. Baldev Singh, who visited Manila, the capital of the Philippines in 2018, would not have imagined in his wildest dreams that this would happen to him.
Baldev Singh of Kapurthala had to face punishment for five years for someone else’s crime just because of his name and communication barriers.
Baldev happily reached Manila and roamed around for 15 days. He had also boarded a plane to come to India at the airport. But suddenly Manila immigration and police removed him from the plane.
From here, the turmoil in Baldev Singh’s life started. Due to lack of knowledge of the local language of Manila, the second biggest mistake happened to Baldev Singh was that he shook his head as soon as he heard his name during the court hearing. After this, he had to spend five years in jail.
