Gakhal-Surjit National Sports Day Hockey tournament to commence on August 27
Punjab E News: The first Gakhal-Surjit National Sports Day (five-a-side) hockey tournament will be played from August 27 at the Surjit Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park.
CEO of Surjit Hockey Society Iqbal Singh Sandhu said that as per the decision of the core committee of the society, the first Gakhal-Surjit National Sports Day (five-a-side) hockey tournament dedicated to the birth anniversary of Indian hockey legend late Olympian Major Dhyan Chand is celebrated every year on August 29, 2023 at the local Surjit Hockey Stadium, It will be organized at Burton Park.
Surjit’s working president Lakhwinder Pal Singh Khaira and L.R. Nayer said that the three-day tournament will be played on the ‘five-a-side pattern’ in the boys and girls category.
In the boys’ category, teams from Jalandhar-XI, Round Glass Hockey Academy, Surjit Hockey Academy, Shrey Hockey Jalandhar, Alpha Hockey Jalandhar, and in the girls’ category, teams from Rail Coach Factory, Kapthala, Jalandhar-XI, CRPF, Lyallpur Khalsa Women’s College, Surjit Hockey Academy and Round Glass Hockey Academy will participate.
The main sponsor of this tournament will be Amolak Singh Gakhal, sports promoter from US, known as Gakhal Brothers, will give a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh to the winning team of Surjit Hockey Tournament.
The main reason for celebrating National Sports Day is to promote sports activities in the country, they added.
Meanwhile, the tournament will be inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner Vishesh Sarangal on August 27 while Jalandhar MP Sushil Rinku will preside over the prize distribution ceremony on August 29.
