Moga Post Flood Normalcy – In adjacent Sutlej areas, life begins to return to normal

26000 cusecs of water currently running in the river

Moga News: After the natural calamity in the form of floods, life is now returning to normal in dozens of villages in Moga district located at the foot of river Sutlej. Although the administration has kept all the duties including the relief camps operational, but currently there is no more danger of flood in this area during the current season. However, people have been urged to be on alert at all times.

Giving information in this regard, Deputy Commissioner Mr Kulwant Singh said that currently, 26000 cusecs of water are flowing in the Sutlej River, which is 6 feet lower than all the levels of floods that have occurred so far. He said that during the monsoon when the rains were lashing across North India. Many districts along the rivers of Punjab were also suffering from this calamity. But timely advance arrangements saved the Moga district from the flood. In Moga, a district situated on the banks of the Sutlej, all the flood prevention measures were completed even before June. Four villages were evacuated as a precaution, there too now there is a normal situation.

He said that the biggest threat of flood is to the villages along the river Sutlej under Dharamkot constituency. That is why the Giddarpindi embankment and the Manjhali embankment of Bhaini village were strengthened with earthen bags by the district administration before the arrival of the monsoon. Even now, concerted efforts are being made to further strengthen the embankment near Sherpur Taiba.        It is being strengthened with earthen bags. The length of this embankment is about 20 meters.
Similarly, the 17.7 km long Bassian drain, 30.18 km long Chand Bhan drain and 13.10 km long Badhani drain were also cleaned earlier. All these three drains pass through 90 villages in Moga district. With this cleaning, the areas of Nihal Singh Wala and Baghapurana remained completely safe.
He said that on July 11, three lakh cusecs of water were flowing in the Sutlej river. If all the above works were not done then the people of district Moga would have to pay a huge price. District Moga lies on the southern side of the Sutlej and the loss is always on the south side.
When the Sutlej was at its full height, a total of three landslides occurred in the district Moga area. Which was promptly taken care of by the administration with the help of the local people. Meanwhile, 155 people living in the river were rescued from the flood waters. Four villages, Pralliwal, Mehruwala, Kambo Khurd and Sanghera were evacuated as a precaution, there are now normal conditions. Now 26 thousand cusecs of water are flowing in the river. Now even if water is released up to 1 lakh, there is no danger.
It is to be mentioned that preparations were started by the District Administration Moga to combat the upcoming flood-like situation so that it can be completed as soon as possible. Deputy Commissioner Mr Kulwant Singh personally supervised these arrangements. After visiting several other sensitive areas including the village Manjhali (Five L) and Bhainiwale (Giddarpindi) embankment, he assured the people of the area that the district administration was already on the alert to combat any possible flood-like situation. The work of cleaning the main four drains in the Moga district was completed before June 30.
The Sutlej River flows in Moga district for a length of about 31 km. An amount of Rs 1.5 crore was released by the Punjab government for strengthening the banks of the river and cleaning the drains. A large number of stones and earthen bags have been used to strengthen the embankment of the river. He said that there are three main dams in Moga district, these three are being closely monitored by the administration.
The Deputy Commissioner said that there was a flood situation in this area in 2019, but last year too, the critical banks were properly repaired and now this year too, due to the repairs, there is less chance of a flood-like situation this time, but still the next few days. The general public and the administration need to be alert till the time. He appealed to the people to cooperate with the district administration. Whenever any emergency is detected, it should be immediately brought to the attention of the administration.
