Voting underway for Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-election, 17.07% voting till 11am
Jalandhar: Over 17% per cent polling was recorded till 11 am today for the by-election to the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat.
AAP, Congress, BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal are pushing to outdo each other in the Dalit stronghold. The seat fell vacant after Congress MP Santokh Chaudhary died of a heart attack while participating in the Punjab leg of party leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in January.
The Congress, which has been unbeaten since 1999, has fielded Chaudhary’s widow Karamjit Kaur, while the AAP has given ticket to MLA Sushil Rinku. The Shiromani Akali Dal-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance has given ticket to Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi, while the BJP has given ticket to Akali Turn and former MLA Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal.
