New Delhi: A US federal court has dismissed the criminal case against Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani and former Adani Green Energy CEO Vneet Jaain over allegations of bribery and fraud linked to solar-power contracts in India.
US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis of the Eastern District of New York approved the US Department of Justice’s request to withdraw the charges under Rule 48(a) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure.
The case has been dismissed “with prejudice”, meaning the criminal proceedings covered by the indictment have been permanently closed and the same charges cannot be brought again.
What was the case?
The case began in November 2024, when US prosecutors accused Adani and other executives of allegedly conspiring to pay about $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar-power contracts.
The Adani Group and the accused had denied the allegations.
The US Justice Department later sought dismissal of the case, arguing that continuing the prosecution was not in the interests of justice. The department cited jurisdictional and evidentiary issues and said the alleged conduct was primarily connected to India.
The court’s latest decision brings the criminal proceedings against Gautam Adani, Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain to an end.
