Jasvir Singh Garhi resigns as Punjab SC Commission chairman, appointed AAP in-charge for Chamkaur Sahib

Chandigarh: Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi has resigned from the post, a day after the Aam Aadmi Party appointed him as its constituency in-charge for Chamkaur Sahib.

Garhi clarified that he submitted his resignation from the constitutional post on August 26, after which the party assigned him the new political responsibility on August 27. He said he will now focus on strengthening the AAP organisation in Chamkaur Sahib.

Garhi was appointed chairman of the Punjab SC Commission on March 7, 2025. His appointment as a political constituency in-charge had raised questions from opposition parties, who pointed out that he held a constitutional position while being given a political responsibility. Garhi has maintained that he had already resigned before accepting the new assignment.

Questions over sitting MLA’s political future

Garhi’s appointment as constituency in-charge has also triggered speculation over the political future of Chamkaur Sahib MLA Dr Charanjit Singh.

Garhi had served as the BSP Punjab president for nearly six years before parting ways with the party in November 2024. He joined the Aam Aadmi Party on January 1, 2025.

During his tenure as SC Commission chairman, Garhi remained involved in several controversies and frequently came into confrontation with opposition leaders. The commission had summoned opposition figures in connection with various allegations and remarks.

He had also summoned Union minister Ravneet Singh Bittu over remarks made during municipal elections and faced criticism over issues involving Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.

Garhi had also drawn criticism over his initial silence following alleged police action against sanitation workers in Barnala. He later visited the city and met the affected workers at the Barnala hospital.
