Channi seeks CBI probe into Sangrur worker’s death, demands Punjab Finance Minister’s arrest

Chandigarh: Former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi has demanded a CBI investigation into the alleged suicide of worker Gulzar Singh in Sangrur district and called for the resignation and arrest of Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema.

Leading a delegation of Congress leaders, Channi met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and accused the Aam Aadmi Party government of failing to maintain law and order in the state.

Channi alleged that Gulzar Singh had raised his voice over his son’s drug addiction in an effort to help him, following which he was allegedly harassed and threatened by local functionaries associated with the AAP.

He also alleged that police took Gulzar Singh’s body from the hospital and cremated it without the family’s consent.

The Congress leader demanded an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and action against those allegedly responsible.

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also demanded Cheema’s resignation, his name be included in the FIR and an impartial investigation into the case.

The allegations made by the Congress leaders have not been independently established.
