AAP appoints former Akali minister Surjit Singh Rakhra as Samana in-charge

Chandigarh: Ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has appointed former Akali minister Surjit Singh Rakhra as its halqa in-charge for the Samana Assembly constituency. The party has also appointed Balbir Singh as the in-charge for Shahkot.

Rakhra’s appointment comes despite Chetan Singh Jouramajra, an AAP leader, currently representing Samana as the party’s MLA. His appointment has triggered fresh political discussion over AAP’s plans for the constituency ahead of the next Assembly elections.

Rakhra joined the AAP in the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He was previously a prominent leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal and served as the Revenue and Rehabilitation Minister in the Parkash Singh Badal-led Punjab government.

He remained associated with the SAD until August 2022 before distancing himself from the party following differences with its leadership, including former party president Sukhbir Singh Badal.

The latest appointments are part of AAP’s organisational preparations in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
