Amritsar: Police on Saturday allegedly killed 19-year-old shooter Karanbir Nandi in an encounter in Amritsar. Karanbir Singh was wanted in connection with the shooting of ASI Jaswant Singh and had reportedly escaped from police custody a few days earlier.
According to police, a team searching for Karanbir surrounded him in the Amritsar rural area. The accused allegedly opened fire at the police in the Kandowalia area, injuring two police personnel.
Police retaliated, and Karanbir was hit by bullets. The police said 14 rounds were fired from both sides during the encounter.
Karanbir suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and chest and fell at the spot. Police took him to Civil Hospital, Ajnala, in an official vehicle, where he died during treatment.
The accused had allegedly fired at ASI Jaswant Singh while he was riding a motorcycle. The ASI narrowly escaped after the bullet pierced his turban and grazed his head.
Police said a Glock 9mm pistol, a .30-bore pistol and a motorcycle were recovered from Karanbir’s possession. Further investigation is underway.
