Patiala: A large number of students gathered at Chitkara University in Patiala after a claim about the deaths of two female students went viral on social media during the night of September 25-26.
The students sought answers from the university administration about the alleged disappearance of female students. They also questioned the arrival of an ambulance on the campus at night and reports of sounds coming from a hostel.
As tensions rose, the university called the police. A confrontation followed between students and police officials, after which some students allegedly damaged a police van.
The students demanded detailed information from the university management and sought examination of CCTV footage from across the campus.
University denies any student death
According to the information provided, the viral message claimed that one female student had died at the university and that another student fell ill after seeing her. It further claimed that the second student was taken to hospital in an ambulance and also died.
As the message spread, students initially became concerned and later gathered on campus to protest and seek clarification.
The university management told the students that no female student had died. However, the students continued demanding CCTV footage and a clear explanation about the incident.
Students also questioned reports of screams allegedly heard from the girls’ hostel and asked why an ambulance had arrived at the campus and who had been taken to hospital.
Police begin verification
DSP Sukhdev Singh said the situation on campus was currently peaceful and that the students’ complaints had been recorded.
He said police would verify the records of each female student to determine whether anyone was missing. Police are also investigating who circulated the information on social media.
SHO Gursewak Singh spoke to the protesting students after police reached the campus. However, the students remained dissatisfied and questioned the police over the alleged missing students.
The situation escalated, with protesting students surrounding a police vehicle and allegedly breaking its windows.
