Mansa: The action committee formed over the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhotta has decided to oppose Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s proposed visit to Mansa on October 20, particularly his planned meeting with the victim’s family.
Committee leaders said they would urge Jhotta’s father, Bhim Singh, not to meet Shah. Hardeep Singh Sidhu, a committee leader, announced the decision following a meeting held late on Sunday evening.
The committee, which is leading the protest demanding justice for Jhotta, said it would oppose Shah if he visits Mansa. However, the home minister’s visit on October 20 has not yet been officially confirmed.
Questioning the BJP-led Centre’s efforts to tackle drug trafficking, the committee said the growing spread of drugs across the country could not be treated as the responsibility of the Punjab government alone. It argued that the Centre also had a significant role to play in curbing the problem.
Meanwhile, the action committee’s first meeting with the district administration is scheduled for October 19. The committee is expected to raise demands concerning the investigation into Jhotta’s murder, action against the accused and justice for the victim’s family.
