Ludhiana: A 27-year-old man died after a fire broke out among firecrackers stored on the top floor of a building in Field Ganj, one of Ludhiana’s congested localities, on Friday afternoon.
The fire triggered loud explosions as the firecrackers began going off, and the flames quickly intensified. During the incident, a wall collapsed following the explosions, trapping Sahil Sabharwal beneath the debris. He died at the scene, according to the information available.
The building reportedly belongs to AAP leader Goldy Sabharwal. A clothing shop operates on the ground floor, while the uppermost floor has a kitchen, a room and the stored firecrackers. Sahil was the son of the AAP leader’s uncle.
Local residents said firecrackers had been stocked in the building. However, Goldy Sabharwal said the firecrackers were left over from last year and caught fire unexpectedly.
The circumstances surrounding the fire and the storage of the firecrackers are yet to be established.
