Ludhiana: The glass covering a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar at Jalandhar Bypass Chowk in Ludhiana was damaged again on Friday, prompting police to detain a woman suspected of involvement in the incident.
Police reached the spot under the jurisdiction of Salem Tabri police station after receiving information about the damage. Officials examined CCTV footage from cameras installed at the intersection, which reportedly showed a woman throwing stones at the glass covering the statue. She was taken into custody and is being questioned about her motive and whether anyone else was involved.
The incident triggered anger among local residents, who gathered at the site and expressed concern. Valmiki community president Chaudhary Yashpal also visited the spot and condemned the incident, calling for a thorough investigation and strict action if it was found to be an attempt to disturb communal harmony.
The statue had become the centre of controversy around four months ago after an unidentified person allegedly placed a garland on it. The incident triggered protests and road blockades in several cities. Following that episode, CCTV cameras were installed at the intersection to monitor the area and prevent further incidents.
Despite the security measures, the latest damage has raised fresh concerns among residents. Police are continuing their investigation.
